Basic Car Care & DIY – Power Steering Fluid

Checking the power steering fluid level is just taking less than 5 minutes and even filling the power steering fluid. Be sure the power steering fluid is in the sufficient level. An empty power steering pump would put you in danger situation. It is advisable to check the power steering fluid regularly. Let DIY today….

    1. When checking the power steering fluid level, the vehicle must stationary and parked on the flat level. It’s best to check the level when the engine is cold.
    2. Locate the power steering fluid reservoir. The reservoir cap will often indicate the wording of “steering” or “power steering”.
    3. Most of cars now have a clear plastic type power steering fluid reservoir. You could check the fluid level by looking at side of the reservoir without opening the reservoir. Wipe it off for a clear view of the markings, and then check the level.
    4. If your vehicle doesn’t have the level indication at outside, you’ll need to unscrew the reservoir cap to check the level. Please clean the cap and the area around it with a clean rag to avoid dirt foul up the power steering system. The cap normally will be built with a dipstick. Wipe the dipstick clean by using a rag. Screw the cap back then unscrew it again and check the fluid level.
    5. Add the power steering fluid to the proper level if necessary. Please note the type of fluid uses or refer to the Car Owner’s Manual for the specification. If you are unsure of the type of fluid, please send your vehicle to the car services centre for advice.
    6. Finally, tighten the cap after top up the fluid.

Tips and Warning:
Power steering fluid does not get “used up”, therefore there is no reason that the fluid would be low. If it continues to be low after few time fill up, there should be a leak. Go and see your mechanic for proper check out.
