If “EPNS” means “electro plated nickel silver — what does NPNS stand for on the bottom of a “silver” tray?

Letter Tray

hcmehlhopt asks:

I have an antique tray with these words: Crescent Silver Manufacturing Company (it no longer exists) and then the letters N.PN.S and the numbers 5259. I cannot find an explanation ANYWHERE. Thanks!

It probably referes to the North Platte Natural Resources District (Nebraska), and the number 5259 is probably the production or serial number, indicating that it was the 5259th tray in that series produced by Crescent Silver Manufacturing Company.
