What is the clicking sound in the engine compartment right after startup?

Zaiya M asks:

I have an 07 altima 3.5 SE, and when started after being off overnight, there is a clicking sound in the engine compartment when I start driving. But then I never hear it again until it hasn’t been driven for a while.

Sounds like it could be lifters (the things that open and close your valves). You may have a faulty oil sending unit. After the lifters warm up/get enough oil, it quits. The oil stays on them between short starts and stops, but when it sits, they dry out.

  1. Could be the valves rattling until the oil pressure is up, but to be on the safe side, it would be best to take it in and have it checked to make sure. The car should still be under warranty. Having it checked will avoid any problems in the future with getting problems warrantied, since there are a few things that can give you the same symptoms and can be real devastating to the engine. ie: depending on the pitch of the clicking, too much clearance on the main bearings, loose rod bearings, valves out of adjustment, etc. It could be just a timing clatter, but you wont know till it is checked out under the warranty. This will also give you peace of mind that you wont have a big bill in the future.

  2. If you still have your warranty, I would take it back to the dealership and have it check. Because it seems like you have a weak oil pump or maybe your just low on oil.
