How do I get rid of maggots from my wheelie bin?

Mike Litoris asks:

On a really hot day, my wheelie bin is covered with flies and when I open it thousands of maggots drop down from the lid rolling around in the rubbish. It is disgusting. How do I get rid of them. I’ve tried spraying them with a hose but nothing happened. Half of my bin is literally full of maggots. I’ve never seen anything like this. How do I get rid of them permanently?

  1. Maggots, by their very nature, don’t live long. They hatch into flies. Wash them out of the bin, and in future don’t put any meat waste into the bin unless it’s very well wrapped. That goes for any other edible food too, but the meat or fish waste will attract flies the most. They lay eggs which become maggots. And wash the bin from time to time so there is nothing there to attract flies.

  2. I’d say wait til the bin is completely empty and give it a damn good clean with bleach and boiling water and make sure the lid is always down and something heavy on top after to try and stop all entry holes for the flies

  3. There is no way to guarantee to get rid of them, however restaurants get them emptied, hose them out with hot water and then spray them.

    Good luck

  4. There are a variety of ways:

I suggest reading “The Definitive Guide to Getting Rid of Maggots”

It will tell you a variety of ways mainly having to do with using chemicals or boiling water on them.
