How does voting work as a stock holder for a public corporation?

Pete asks:

If majority of the stock holders voted to boot off Steve Balmer as CEO, can they? Or does Chairman Bill Gates only have that power or the members on the board? How much power does each individual stock holder have as far as voting goes? Is it just “Well, we’ll evaluate your input. Thank you for your vote.”

Your vote as an individual is based on the number of voting shares that you have. Since a good chunk of the shares are owned by institutions your individual vote doesn’t count much.
