What use have storage organs in plants other than storing energy etc?

My little brother had a question from his science test which asked what another use of storage organs in plants are, apart from the obvious function of storing things. Can anyone come up with some?

protection, support, store energy up to use for reproduction, human artificial selection so they are good to eat so we cultivate them more
