What is the best way to clean a shower curtain?

Shower Curtain

AbsolutZero asks:

It’s getting to be that time of month where I take down and clean my shower curtain. Usually I throw it in a cold wash with nothing but bleach.

However, I’ve spent too much money on replacement shower curtains over the last year, so does anyone know a better way?
It’s vinyl. The part that goes inside is where i have all my problems.

  1. I generally just toss it in the wash with any white towels or DH’s undershirts and add detergent and a bit of bleach. Once, when I let it go too long, that wasn’t enough. So I laid it out on our (flat) roof in the sun and scrubbed it with scouring powder and warm water, then rinsed it clean. Turned out just fine.

  2. the BEST way is to lay it flat out in the yard, grimey side up, and sprinkle laundry detergent all over it and scrub it with a bristle brush with a long handle so you don’t have to go down on your knees to clean it.

then just rinse it off. You don’t even need to let it dry out. What would be the point?

  3. put them in the washing machine with some towels if they are the liners( the pasltic ones. u can walsh them just like u do wiht ur towles . but if they are the fabrice ones then just wash them on gental cycle. i usuallly but some baking soda in there.it works like a charm

  4. So then is this a fabric curtain or vinyl? You can use peroxide instead of bleach. I have a fabric curtain with a vinyl liner and I just spray the liner with bath tub cleaner while doing the rest of the bathroom. I spray the cleaner off after letting it set (but not dry) and scrub the bottom part where the soap builds up. I don’t take it down to do this, I just use the bathtub scrubber with the vinyl up against the side of the tub. I put a towel down on the floor and let it drip dry on the outside of the tub.
