the smell am talking about is a damp musty smell, in a small cupboard under the stairs. any ideas!?

I have tried, bleach, candles, incense, sprays. I tried using the cupboard to put coats and shoes, but had to remove them as they began to get moldy.

If nothing is getting rid of it you need to go to he source, which sounds like damp in the brickwork. Try leaving the door open permanently for a few days to see if that will make a difference. If not, you might have a more ingrained problem.

I have used moth balls. The ones that have a little hanging container and you place the moth balls inside. It really works

The wood that the cupboard is made of may have the mold right in the wood by now. You may have to tear it out and replace it in order to be able to use it for clothing storage. Use some of the tips the others have given you to keep the new wood from getting damp and moldy too.

talk a walk outside and see if there is a gutter drain pipe near the damp area.. when our basement was damp, my husband bought pcp pipe and put it underneath the drain pipe, 2 lead the rain water further away from the house.. worked like a charm.. you can always put shrubs or flowers around 2 hide the pipe.. also look 4 leaky pipes inside the house around that area.. bummer eh ~

    Two things:
    1. Pretty obvious, but check there are no leaks or any obvious sources of water getting into the cupboard. Check under the carpet and feel the walls to see if they feel wet or damp as that could be the source of the problem. If there are problems, then get them fixed.

    2. If it’s just the collection of warm moist air that’s causing this problem, then get yourself some Damp-Rid absorbent sachets or similar (there’s the Hippo one, and Dry-sorb, plenty of others) from the hardware store. Hang them up in the cupboard, and replace them regularly. They will eliminate the moisture pretty quickly and this will reduce the odour. Keep the door to the cupboard shut when not in use though.

Look for a small non-electric dehumidifier.
