You don’t say if it’s an above or in-ground pool. But, here goes. I would try to scoop out everything I could with a leaf rake. They are sold at pool supply stores for less than $20. After you get the junk out, clean the filters, the pump basket, and any skimmer baskets. Start the pump. Add 3 to 4 pounds of shock to the water and let it run 24 hours. The water should turn cloudy and then clear up a lot. At that point take a water sample to a reputable pool store. They will test it for free and tell you what you need to do to balance the pool. Once you’ve got the water balanced you need to clean the filter again. You’ll need to brush the pool regularly and maintain the chemical balance.

If you find a monster in there, be sure to call the biology department of your nearest university. 8>)

use a skimmer to take all the leaves and junk out of it – go to the pool store and tell them what you’re up against – yes they want to sell you stuff, but they also want you to be a happy customer.
draining a built in pool can be a really really serious mistake.

Call for professional help. Draining your pool can be VERY expensive.
