What is the best type of wood to use for a deck?

I have a boat slip that I want to put a deck over. I plan on using 16 foot beams with a one foot overlay on each side (slip is 14 feet wide). There will be no vertical support in the middle of the slip, the entire deck will be supported by the beams laying over the slip. What type of wood is best for these beams, and how large should they be? Also, any advice on how to make this work better would be appreciated.

If I had to do my deck over again, I would use composite wood. Every year I have to either stain it or take off the stain. Drives me crazy!
