How often to replace a dish sponge?

I recently moved to a place that has a dishwasher. I used to wash all my dishes with hot soapy water then dip in bleach water. That kept the dish sponge fairly fresh. Now with the dishwater I don’t use bleach anymore. How often do you replace your dish sponge?

Weighty stuff, I know…

Well, I microwave mine at least once a week (wet it first) to keep it fresh and replace whenever it looks bad. This is usually about every 6 weeks.

Right now and do not replace it. Use a cloth and wash it often or disposable cloth. Sponges are impossible to keep clean unless used with bleach water and stored in bleach water, but that will soon destroy the sponge.

I just change it as needed. It will be evedent when it needs to be changed. I don’t let it get ratty but check it and when I have determined that its ready to go I pitch it and get another one from the pack below.

I replace it whenever it needs to be replaced. However, you can run the sponge through the dishwasher cycle several times before getting rid of it becomes necessary. If you are worried about the germs that may be accumulating in it, then just rinse it out thoroughly and zap it in the microwave for 20-30 seconds. That will kill the germs. When you take it out of the microwave, however, be careful because it will be very hot.

You can put it in the top of your dishwasher eveytime you do the dishes other wise go back to dipping it in bleach water. 9 parts water 1 part bleach

I get a new one every second week, as per protocol of the commandant.

    One week.

Sponges are bacteria heaven. If you’re using the sponge to wipe down the counter or use it daily for other stuff, it’s just not worth your health to save two bucks and keep around a nasty sponge.

Person before me is correct: bleach will break down the sponge. Just go to BJ’s or Costco and buy a bunch for cheap!

You can still dip it in bleach water after each use, but keep in mind that bleach will deteriorate it faster also. I replace mine when it starts to discolor. If it starts to smell….do it last week.
