Do I have to install an electrical box for my outdoor ceiling fan?

I have the wiring all ready to go….just don’t want to extend the fan height by adding the box, and I can’t imagine recessing it. Thanks.

Legally, code wise, probably. Will it get checked by an inspector – I don’t know. If you have an approved outside fan, already have a head-space issue, and have a secure method of mounting it, I say “do it”. I’ve done it before.

It definitely needs a box. they sell shallow boxes ,only 1/2″ deep or so. also available if you have to recess it ,get an “old work” box. it has tabs that open to secure it , but you will want to want to provide additional support w/ screws.
