I’ve been curious about radon mitigation fans even though I don’t need one. I saw a TV show where _

they installed one, but they didn’t let us hear how the fan sounds, and I can’t even find, via a search here, anything about how they sound.

You know you have to leave this fan running ALL THE TIME in order to have the safest benefit from it, and the noisier that is, the harder it would be to live with! (I know that those fans are in an attic or a garage or back corner outside, though.) That’s weird to me–to have to just leave a motor running 24/7/365 (other than motors in the hard disk drives and fans of computers that are servers, etc.)!

Who here has one of those radon fans or just knows someone who does, who has heard it and knows what they sound like? What do they sound like?

Just curious.

Thanks,
Mike
Oh, that show was This Old House. (The more recent episode was just a year or so ago, while there was a time 15-20+ years ago when they talked about it before, but I don’t remember that episode very well, and I don’t remember if they showed the sound on that one or not.)

Hey, please visit back to see what responses I’ve given your answers, okay?

Thanks,
Mike
Hey, Radon Guy,

Nice answer. Oh, good, so those never sound like a vacuum cleaner that’s always running (for some reason I thought I’d heard about that once). That’s good to know–not that I have to have one of those or live near one, but that’s good to know, anyway.

Oh, and it’s cool that your teacher is the guy who was on the more recent This Old House episode about a radon fan!

Thanks,
Mike

  1. Radonguy says:

    Hi Mike,
Radon fans are very quiet and and energy efficient. Most fans that I install are running at less than 60 watts. Some of the higher suction fans used pull air through non-porous soils do create a slight hum sometimes detectable to the home owner. But this is rarely a nuisance, just a little white noise.

On the outside of the home where the exhaust is located a rushing air noise can be somewhat loud but a muffler can be placed on the end of the pipe to minimize the noise.

By the way the guy that did the radon mitigation on the This Old House episode was my instructor.
