Best source is the Anarchist’s Cookbook. It is not sold in the US anymore, but you may be able to find it online. Another good book for stuff like that is Backyard Ballistics (My buds and I got the plans for our trebuchet (Catapult) from this book and had tons of fun lobbing pumpkins around with it).

The information is out there, amazingly enough, public libraries seem to be a pretty good source of info. That said, many of the ingredients like potassium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, and nitrocellulose are just about impossible to get ahold of anymore thanks to the Department of Homeland Security. Expect nosy questions and quite possibly a visit by humorless men in bad suits.
