Hi. I am using an old fashion lawn cutter, no motor. How can I sharpen the cutting blade?

The old fashion lawn cutter is not old. It is actually new. Just wanted to know if I can sharpen the blades. Also, a cutting technique that will cut down the time I spend mowing the yard. Anything else, a hint or tip will help. Thanks

gee dude…your a brave man. That aint no party trick your asking with the sharpening. I have one of the old school mowers…..easiest way to use them unfortunately is to cut the grass about 2 x a week…anything more than a 2 inch cut is pretty hard work/ next to impossibe as the mower just chews it.
The shareping is kinda complicated……easiest way to explain it requires pictures. I’ll do my best here but if you dont follow me drop me a line and I’ll draw soemthing up and email it.
So….basically what you are aiming for is a 30 degreee cutting edge all the way along each blade of the drum/barrel/tumbler..whatever you wish to call it. So if you were looking at a cross section of on of the blades, the underside of the blade would intersect with the cutting face at 30 degrees. Sounds fairly straightforward? It aint….really. Practice on and old knife/ pair of shears or some such running a grinding stone of about 4-800 grit along it. Ideally your going to want to buy an angle tester…a brass disc with small nicks taken out that correspond with a variety of sharpening angles. Be prepared to spend around 5 hours on practice and then probably about 3 hours on the job itself to get a reasonable (not awesome by any means) edge on it. I test blades I shapen by shaving my left arm with them. When you can do this with the practice blades (not including shears…perhaps dangerous since they are unwieldy) then you will be able to have a shot at the mower. Bear in mind the twist in the blade (unless you have a really old style one with parallel blades)..this means you will have to be very carefull to maintain the 30 degree angle along it.
Lol….just read the post above…yeah…or find a sharpenign tool for it. They dont work well enough for what I need so I didnt think of it.
Best of luck.
There is a special blade sharpening tool, but I don’t know the name of it. You could find it at your local Ace hardware. You can have someone sharpen the blades for you, try looking locally for a lawnmower, small engine repair shop.
The only way to cut down the time mowing your yard using a non engine mower is to walk faster or run.
