I just bought this on DVD, and it is 82 minutes! I found it used. This may not be the first horror movie, but according to to a direct quote from the back of this DVD: “This silent masterpiece has been called the first ‘cult’ movie and the first horror film of genuine quality and substance.”

Actually, the first horror movie was “Le Manoir Du Diable” (1896) (aka The Devil’s Castle), even though it was only about two minutes long.

  3. LuckyStrike502 says:

This version is shorter only because it’s the “condensed” version, which means it was sped up.

Amazing, they made this in Germany just after World War One ended. A lot of dread in this one, and very expressionistic.

Actually it is believed that Le Manoir du diable (aka “The House of the Devil”) was the first Horror Film Ever made and that was made in 1896

I just watched the full uncondensed version with live music from an Orchestra. Double bassist Andrew Downing created a much more sombre soundtrack to it, then this version. I really thought the music he wrote for it was much better for the movie this this music, this music is much to happy for a ‘horror’ film, I think.

I like this film a lot! Not really spooky but still quite disturbing! I liked the scenes with Cesare and the ending best.
