I have mostly dirt in the back yard. Lately, I have noticed several funnel-shaped holes. What are they?

These holes are grouped together and go into the dirt about 1-1/2 inches. I have not seen any sign of life, but they reappear after I have raked over them. Please tell me what could be making these holes.

I’m not sure why all the answers have a thumbs down. But those holes sound like those that come from moles. At first like a couple of other people I thought they were doodle bug holes, but it sounds like mole holes to me.

Without more detail, I’m going to guess these are ant lions. Their larvae live underground and create the funnel-shaped holes as a means to trap food, usually small bugs like ants. If the hole is still active (ie the bug is still alive), and assuming it is since they keep reappearing, find a very thin twig and barely touch the side/bottom of the funnel. You’ll see a very quick snap of an ugly bug face lol Despite appearance, they’re absolutely harmless. They won’t come inside your house, they won’t bite you, and they aren’t poisonous. If anything, they’re beneficial because they’ll eat other bugs.

They are death traps built by Ant Lions!
Sounds far out but it is true.
They live under the sand and make those funnel shaped holes so ants will fall in there, then they eat them.
Type ant lions into google to see pics.
    Cool huh.

I find those in my barn all the time. There actually is a little bug that lives in the hole. I’m not sure what they’re called, but they’re harmless.

You won’t see them either, they are nocturnal creatures.

Just to take a guess, because I have had the same problem in the past, is depending on where you live, you could have either moles or snakes. I hope I helped! (:
