My Ethan Allen black wooden headboard has a large grease spot on it from the back of my husband’s head. He rests his head against the headboard when reading and the oil from his hair has left a noticeable stain which i want to remove. This mark stands out because it has an oily appearance in contrast to the matt finish of the headboard.
What is the best way to tackle this?
Is there a cleaning product that will draw out the grease?
Or will I have to sand the headboard down and refinish it?
Thanks!

It is correct that if it is really in there, that the only option to restore may be to refinish. On the other hand, I had a similar problem once with a grease stain on a treasured wooden table. What I opted to do (I am not much on refinishing), was to rub oil into the rest of the table to give it an even finish. It actually turned out quite nicely. You might want to try some tung oil in a small hidden section of the bed to see if it matches your stain.
do not attempt to refinish it.it will never be the same.try some cleaning fluid on a damp cloth.dothe entire head board.dry, then polish with pledge or the like.i think that will do it.good luck.
you could try shampoo in warm water. it’s hard to answer without seeing and if the headboard is finished it shouldn’t have absorbed anything. there is also Murphy’s oil soap (don’t use much it’s strong) that’s for wood finishes. or my mom likes an orange cleaner for wood finishes but I can’t remember the name of it right now – I know “Orange” is in the title.
If the oil has soaked in, your pretty much screwed. If not, use Lysol 4 in 1 cleaner. It removes oil very well. GOOD LUCK
Sand down the headboard and refinish. Then buy your husband a nightcap.
use some course grit sandpaper.
